Ecological Restoration – applied research projects at Outão quarry site
Otília Correia Professor at DBV/FCUL
Abstract
I will present a summary of several research trials performed at a limestone quarry located in Outão, within the boundaries of the Arrábida Natural Park. The goal is to provide scientific assistance to improve the efficiency of restoration actions carried out by the mining enterprise (Secil) through the implementation, monitoring and analysis of field, nursery and greenhouse trials, according to several main targets:
i) Evaluate restoration success, by comparing floristic structure and diversity among areas differing in age since revegetation with a reference ecosystem;
ii) Select and test the potential of native species for restoration and improve germination and establishment of target species;
iii) Improve soil quality, namely water and nutrient availability, through soil amendments
The results of these experiments provide guidelines to restoration and conservation practitioners, contributing to achieve more suitable and cost-effective restoration techniques and, therefore, to mitigate global change impacts and increase biodiversity in Mediterranean degraded areas. |

The use of ecological indicators for monitoring environment changes
Cristina Branquinho Investigadora CBA (Ciência 2007)
Abstract
One of the main objectives of the Environmental Stress and Functional Ecology group is to use biological organisms for monitoring the impact of pollution on environment and on ecosystem functioning and to use the knowledge and the scientific principles of structure and functioning of ecosystems to develop ecological management processes and define a sustainable strategy for the ecological restoration of degraded ecosystems. I will focus mainly on this objectives and show several cases studies of the work developed, namely on the use of ecological indicators of global change for: land-use changes, nitrogen pollution, toxic organic air pollution and climate change. |
